Patient summary

Montelukast 4mg, 5mg and 10mg, as chewable and film-coated tablets, used for asthma and allergic rhinitis. A leukotriene receptor antagonist.

Mechanism of action

Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist. It selectively blocks the action of cysteinyl leukotrienes in the lungs, which are inflammatory mediators released in response to inhaled allergens, thereby preventing airway constriction and swelling.

Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist: it blocks substances in the body that narrow and inflame the airways. It is taken once a day to prevent asthma symptoms and exercise-induced narrowing of the airways, and for the symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay fever). It comes as 10 mg tablets for adults and 4 and 5 mg tablets for children; the original brand is Singulair.

Montelukast may cause serious or life-threatening mental health changes, during treatment or after it has stopped, even in people who have never had mental health problems. Stop it and contact a doctor straight away if you notice changes in mood or behaviour (MedlinePlus). It does not relieve a sudden asthma attack.
