Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder

Hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) is persistently low or absent sexual desire that causes marked distress or difficulty in a relationship. Low desire on its own is common and is not a disorder; the distress is what defines it.

Causes and when to see a doctor

Desire is affected by relationships, stress, tiredness, mood, hormones, other illnesses and many medicines, including some antidepressants. A GP can look for these causes first, because treating them often helps more than a medicine for desire.

Treatment

For women under 65 with acquired, generalised HSDD, flibanserin (Flibanserin) is an approved medicine. It acts on brain chemistry, is taken daily, and must not be combined with alcohol close to a dose. Sildenafil, sold for women as Lady Era, is not approved for this.
